These systems are a combination of heating and cooling by reversing the cooling process of the system these systems operate with a 14 seer and a 3.5 cop typically. Oil fired equipment does not have a chance to stabilize operation some times until outdoor demand reaches 25 deg. These systems are installed to off set the cost of operating an oil fired system in the 25 to 55 deg outdoor ranges or replace the fuel completely. The house or other medium could be cool by removing the heat from the house in the cooling season and the reversed by removing the heat from out side and heating the house. Remember there is always some heat down to 450 deg below zero you only need to extract it. With to day’s new two stage operations and design a system is capable of heating a house down to 0 deg outside where the older systems started dropping off at 35 deg and electric back up heat was needed.
